Program Note
[The Idiot] is an Estonian adaptation of the Dostoyevsky’s novel of the same title. It is a drama of annihilation driven by significant characters of Myshkin, Natasha, and Rogozhin. Myshkin’s sincerity is mistaken as naivete and laughed at by others. Despite his effort to maintain his mental health, his epilepsy leaves him as an idiot. Though written in the late 19th century, the novel’s been adapted numerous times as plays and films by artists such as Andrzej Zulawski to address the identity issue in modern society. This adaptation is true to the original novel yet works as a mirror to reflect minds of contemporary people. (LEE Sang-yong)
