Program Note
In the remote Nepalese village of Dolpa, Prakash enjoys a life of privilege with his father and his sister. Despite his social status, he attends the same elementary school as his best friend, Kiran, the grandson of the village chief. After the King of Nepal announces his plans to visit the village, the residents decide to purchase chickens that they can raise and present to him upon his arrival. Meanwhile, local Maoists, despite being in peace treaty negotiations with the government, are busy plotting a full-scale armed attack. In the midst of the tension, Prakash finds and nurtures a hen with the hope to sell its eggs in order to save enough money to go and see a movie. However, due to its ominous cries at night, his father sells the treasured chicken to an old man in a neighboring village, driving Prakash to retrieve the hen against all odds. In such a way, BAHADUR BHAM’s Black Hen poetically portrays how a boy’s simple dreams clash with the cold reality of a village torn by confrontation. (KIM Byeong-cheol)
