Program Note
[Choked] is a gruesome portrait of family disintegration. Surprisingly the mother is the main cause for the family breakup. She becomes embroiled in a pyramid scheme, and as a result, has to run away to hide from the failed financial endeavor. Subsequently, her son is left to deal with unmanageable trauma, also causing his engagement to crumble. This coming-of-age film mocks and overturns common perceptions of motherhood, which is traditionally respected and admired. But this poignant, provocative film does not just criticize the mother. All the characters’ follow a common thread, intimating that their problems are not just their own responsibility. This is also far from a sentimental film as their stories chillingly unfold, leaving a lasting and likely uncomfortable impression on the viewer. Despite this, the vaguest hint of hope lingers. The impassioned performances, stunning production value, and mature direction will ensure the debut feature film by director Kim Joong-hyun has an impact. (JEON Chanil)
