Program Note
Acclaimed Iranian film director Jafar Panahi cruises the streets of Tehran in a taxi. Having been forbidden to produce films for the next 20 years and on house arrest for propagating an anti-Islamic message to the world, the sheer fact that he created this movie is in itself amazing. Panahi meets various passengers as a taxi driver. In truth, the passengers know who he is. Their conversations are captured in the camera installed on the dashboard, and thus we hear pleasant and profound stories about life, film, politics and arts. Suggestive of Abbas Kiarostani′s taxi drama Ten (2002) and CHOIHA Dongha’s independent documentary Taxi Blues (2006), this film also includes Panahi′s self-reflective stories about film. It seems to be a documentary, but it is really an elaborately designed film that intentionally blurs fabrication and truth. This is his way of calling attention to the meaning of making films in Iran today and to confess his love for the medium. Taxi took home the Golden Bear at this year′s Berlin International Film Festival. (KANG Sowon)
