Program Note
In a place where languor and emptiness hover more ominously than death, a man, unwilling to part with his married daughter after the death of his wife, takes drastic measures to keep her by his side. With difficulty, the daughter manages to make it through each day by taking care of the dying horse her mother left behind before she passed away. The Man Who Became a Horse is based on Anton Chekhov’s short story Sorrow, which tells of a man who, on the way to the hospital with his sick wife, complains about and then feels remorse for the life he′s led. However, this film takes the narrative a step further to explore in greater depth the extremely lunatic state of a man’s inner world taken over by self-pity. With the dying horse and the distantly resonating sound of a train serving as allegory for a meandering old man and his daughter who strives to get away from him, the film is a meditation on life′s impasses and departures.
