Program Note
Since her husband Yusuke disappeared three years ago, Mizuki has led a lonely life, teaching piano to others in her community. That is until the day he reappears, telling her that he has been dead the entire time and asking her to join him on one final journey. Unable to let go of her beloved partner, Mizuki agrees to go with him.
In Journey to the Shore, the dead are unable to forget their past lives, returning to their loved ones and the places they were most fond of while alive. They exist alongside the living and even interact with them. In one moving scene, Yusuke, holding on to the last memory the two will share, utters the poignant phrase: “Nothingness is not meaningless. Yet all things begin from nothingness.” Likewise, in the end, the couple’s very last journey results in an unavoidable conclusion that paradoxically gives birth to a new beginning.
Journey to the Shore is an adaptation of Yumoto Kazumi’s novel of the same title. It received the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. (KIM Byeong-Cheol)
