Police begin an investigation into patient drug overdoses and the suicide of a doctor at the hospital where Xuehui works. The incidents begin after the hospital director and management, blinded by greed, are bribed by a pharmaceutical company to prescribe ERGLE, a drug that has yet to receive official approval for clinical use. With her daughter lying in the intensive care unit and showing no signs of recovery, Xuehui decides to end her suffering by administering the drug—a choice that estranges Xuehui from her husband. On top of this, the hospital director uses the incident to blackmail Xuehui into taking the blame for the entire ERGLE debacle with the pharmaceutical company. Sentence Me Guilty is a harsh critique of the reality in China, where illegal transactions with pharmaceutical companies and the over-prescription of drugs have become rampant. It also brings a true-to-life perspective of the pain and conflict suffered by a parent who turns to euthanasia to end the suffering of a loved one.
