Program Note
Devi spends the night in a hotel with his college friend Piyush, but is discovered and arrested by the police. When the police threaten Piyush’s father with telling everyone what she′s done, the father, a Sanskrit professor, starts bribing them. Meanwhile, would-be engineer Deepak meets Shaalu on Facebook and falls in love. But he hesitates to take their relationship to the next level since he′s from a lower caste while she′s from a higher caste. One day, Shaalu dies in an accident and Deepak has to cremate her body. The Ganges River in Varanasi is believed to wash away all the burdens and sins of humans and is thus considered sacred. But it doesn’t seem to wash away the sins brought on by society. Even though Devi and Deepak want to live lives different from those of their parent′s generation, they are forced to deal with tragic fates born from unfair gender discrimination and a strict caste system.
