Program Note
Third generation Korean-Japanese director O Mipo’s fourth feature weaves together three tales from a short story collection by Nakawaki Hatsue. Set in a village in Hokkaido, the film focuses on how big problems can emerge even in the smallest communities.
Okano is the new teacher at an elementary school, and his students and classroom—a daily chaotic mess—begin to make him realize that his chosen profession may very well be the most difficult job in the world. Meanwhile, across town, an elderly woman in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease befriends a gentle boy with a mental disability, and Masami, the mother of a 3-year-old girl, feels guilty about abusing her child. Surrounding these characters are a diverse range of townsfolk who impart their own bits of wisdom, including a pleasant neighborhood woman and a boy abused by his stepdad.
When pointing her lens at these characters and issues, She is able to dissolve the violence, verbal abuse, negligence, and intimidation with heart-warming moments, suggesting that answers to society’s woes start with us paying attention and can often be resolved just by simply knocking on the doors of those in need.
