A man and a woman’s daily routines coincide with one another. Sari watches movies every day in her cramped room to get away from the fatigue of work. Alek also can’t escape from a dark small room where he works on subtitles for pirated DVDs. The glamorous massage parlor where Sari works and the electronic goods displayed in the shopping mall where Alek works belong to completely different worlds. Having no other hobby other than watching movies in a cramped room, Sari and Alek fall in love with each other. But when Sari steals a DVD from a client, the two lovers’ lives fall into serious peril. Contrasting different classes and spaces, A Copy of My Mind sheds light on the stark realities of Jakarta, particularly the 2014 presidential campaign, which is used to help point out the problems in Indonesian society. Using documentary clips, the film presents issues related to power and corruption through the eyes of ordinary people. It is especially painful to watch such young people who, without any hope, are not even allowed to love as they would like. (Minah JEONG)
