Program Note
Based on a true story, it explores the 1978 kidnapping of a child in Busan. When the child is taken, the parents naturally try every possible means to find their daughter. At the request of the despairing couple, Detective Gong Gilyong takes the case on, but the clever kidnapper makes no mistakes. In desperation, the mother and relatives seek out renowned fortune tellers to establish if the girl is dead or alive. Most foretell her death, but Kim Jungsan—who is not yet a famous psychic—suggests the girl is alive. The investigation team attempts to solve the case in cooperation with the Seoul police, but Detective Gong realizes neither those from Seoul or Busan is interested in the fate of the girl; their only interest is in catching the kidnapper, while Detective Gong unwillingly works with the fortune teller. Director Kwak Kyung-taek uses his expertise to visualize the twisting and unwinding of this knot of the case; exposing the shocking portrait of those prioritizing themselves, while heartlessly gambling with the life of an innocent child.
