Program Note
Ying Lao collects used furniture for a living and his neighbor, Xiaowin, is a dancer at a strip club. After Ying Lao gets into an accident that injures his eyes, Xiaowin, feeling sorry for him, begins to look after him. At the same time, she searches for an office job, but after continual rejection, she starts working at the strip club again. On the very day she returns, the now-recovered Ying Lao comes to the bar to look for her, but, embarrassed by working in such a place, she manages to avoid him. They yearn for each other, but being together isn′t as easy as it seems. Will their innocent love ever be realized? Much of Underground Fragrance takes place on the outskirts of Beijing and inside a room in the basement a building that, amid the fervid urban development of China′s capital city, will soon be demolished. The difficult struggles of the characters in this film are realistically portrayed under the direction of Peng Fei, who learned film production in France before working as an assistant director for Taiwanese auteur Tsai Ming-liang.
