Program Note
Money can’t buy everything, but it’s surprising what people think it can buy. Young Blanka makes her living begging and stealing on the streets of Manila, dreaming of saving up enough money to “buy” a mother. After meeting Peter, a blind street musician, she discovers that she has a gift for singing. However, after being accused of stealing from a patron at a music club, she parts with Peter and starts hanging out with old acquaintances, Raul and Sebastian. But Raul isn’t interested in helping her and instead tries to sell Blanka to a brothel. In the eyes of the children in this film, Manila is a cruel yet beautiful place. The kids make money dishonestly but they manage to survive by developing a world and a language that′s theirs and theirs alone. Actress Cydel Gabutero, who became famous as a Youtube star and gave a jaw-dropping performance on The Voice Kids Philippines, puts on a very impressive performance as Blanka, a free soul on the streets.
