Program Note
In a love story that seems like a combination of Romeo and Juliet and Tom and Jerry, Rumi and Yulia are friends who grew up together in the same village. But they have to keep their distance from each other since their parents do not quite get along. This film, moreover, is set during the 1970s and 1990s, when Indonesian society was in chaos.
Rumi’s family runs a lemonade factory, which eventually goes bankrupt, and Yulia’s family confronts difficult times when her father leaves them. Rumi and Yulia share a lot of secrets and have counted on each other since their childhood, but they are not sure about their love being influenced by their parents. Rumi is afraid he could become like his violent father while Yulia doesn’t trust men due to the father who suddenly deserted her family.
Director Garin Nugroho observes how Indonesian society, economy and culture have changed through the love of Rumi and Yulia. And the retro style mise-en-scène and music are breathtakingly beautiful. (KIM Ji-seok)
