Director Tsai Ming Liang and actor Lee Kang-sheng have worked on films together for almost twenty years. They have become the closest of companions. But do they really know each other that well? Afternoon is a film that gives a glimpse into the lives of these soulmates, revealing both things which they may have been unaware of and secrets that they have hidden from each other. Afternoon, therefore, is an open diary but also a series of meditations. In one instance, Tsai Ming Liang asks Lee Kang-sheng if he would like to work with him again in the next life, to which the latter answers: “Of course. I just wish I could be the director and you the actor.” There are many parts of the film that only their fans will understand, but listening to them talk about how hard their lives have been as artists and how often they have felt alienated by society will draw universal empathy.
