Set in a hotel room and spanning several decades, Eric KHOO’s most recent film recounts episodic tales of love, life, and desire for a multicultural cast of characters who make love, fight, fall into despair, and experience fear, delight, and regret. It is only in such a room that anonymity can be guaranteed and secretive and taboo desires can bubble to the surface. The room is reality, but also fantasy; a place isolated from the rest of the world. Each episode has its own separate and intricate mise-en-scene and genre to match its era and atmosphere. While one episode is a classic and elegantly presented queer tragedy played out in black and white, another is an exaggerated sex comedy in full color. Yet another episode is a passionate melodrama about a married woman’s cravings, while another sequence talks about a noble and innocent ghost who has remained in the hotel room for decades, compassionately watching the people who come and go. He is the constant voice that brings to fore the history that has been weaved within the walls of this decaying hotel room. (CHO Hyeyoung)
