Program Note
Tharlo is a shepherd in a remote Tibetan village, his long ponytail so well known among the villagers that they have given him the nickname “braided hair.” Needing an identification card, Tharlo heads to the village center to get his self-portrait taken. While there, he happens to meet Yangchuo, who works at the hair salon. The two end up spending the night together, and Yangchuo asks Tharlo to sell his sheep and leave the village with her. He quickly agrees and heads home to sell his sheep. When he returns, Yangchuo shaves Tharlo′s head and they stay up all night getting drunk together. But the next morning, Yangchuo is nowhere to be found. Pema Tesden is known for the films The Silent Holy Stones (2004) and Old Dog (2014). As a Tibetan director who has created “Tibetan films” and speaks the Tibetan language, Pema once again uses black and white images and long-takes to bring to life a more realistic portrayal of the lives and issues of identity that are felt by Tibetans living in a world that is gradually becoming more modernized.
