Program Note
In 2009 the High Court of Delhi reached the verdict that homosexuality wasn’t a crime. However, in 2013, the Supreme Court of India overturned this decision. Based on a true story, Aligarh is a film that explores India’s anachronistic approach to homosexuality, which directly correlates to and reflects a society’s awareness of basic human rights.
A professor of Marathi literature is suspended from his university after being accused of having a homosexual relationship with a male. Meanwhile, a young journalist looking for his big break decides to investigate the story. The journalist discovers that not everything is as it seems and sets out to expose the truth. Helped by friends, the professor files a lawsuit to keep his job but he doesn’t seem concerned all that much about the trial. Exasperated by the snobbish attitude toward love, applied as a uniform standard and adopted by people who confuse it with sex, the professor just wants the whole situation to go away. A beautiful film that asks what is the true meaning of love. (KIM Young-woo)

Hansal MEHTA
Hansal’s early films reflect the various subcultures that inhabit the culturally complex city of Bombay, and include his debut feature Victory (1998), the tragic but funny Don’t Take It to Heart (2000), and the gangster film, Deceit (2001). He went on to make What’s Happening (2002), Ashes (2005), and Woodstock Villa (2008) before returning to his roots with Shahid (2012) and Citylights (2014).
