Program Note
Ahmed, a construction worker, lends his cousin money that he had received from a customer as a deposit. Unable to get it back, he has no money to return to his customer, nor does he have enough to proceed with construction. He is charged with fraud and sentenced to three months in prison. Ahmed’s only hope now is that his cousin, Abu Wafaa, sells some imported laptops to put up bail. After spending a nervous and fearful first night in prison, he realizes that his original plan to be released soon will not be so easy to achieve. As the days pass, Ahmed comes to feel a strange sense of security inside the prison. Within its walls, he does not have to worry about what to eat, and, without the worries he had in the outside world, he feels free for the first time in his life. The cinematic expression of physical confinement actually bringing freedom makes clear the ironic reality that society is not free. For this reason, the camera captures the oppressive walls inside the prison in a warm blue tone. (HONG Soin)
