Program Note
Wen Jie meets and befriends Yang Dan, an actress, at a theater workshop. She also meets her boyfriend, Li Yihuan. A strange emotional vibe develops between the trio, and, when Li Yihuan’s father goes bankrupt, the three new friends leave Beijing on a motorcycle and head to Wen Jie’s hometown in Dunhuang. As they travel, they share their individual sorrows and grow closer. In Dunhuan, Wen Jie and Li Yihuan go out to watch the stars in the desert, but almost die in a storm. Shaken, the three all return to Beijing. A few years later, they are living completely different lives. Wen Jie has become a famous actress and Li Yihuan her manager. However, he leaves her after it’s rumored that she’s a lesbian. Meanwhile, Wen Jie is driven to tears while eating a meal that Li Yihuan had bought for her. What happened that night when the two went to watch the stars in Dunhuan? The film gently captures a tale of young lovers amongst the beautiful western scenery of China. (KANG Naeyoung)
