In winter 1979, a family gathers at their holiday home in Gunji, a resort town in India, to see in the New Year together. While introverted cousin Shyamal, free-spirited eldest brother Bonnie, Nandu and his wife, and Mimi—in a subtly romantic relationship with Bonnie—spend some tedious hours playing trivial games, Shyamal, who is in trouble due to his personal problems, spends time with his little nephew. The extended family appears to be perfectly happy but as relationships sour and unexpected events continue to crop up, the family trip is headed for disaster. A Death in the Gunji is the startling debut film by Konkona Sensharma, who comes from a filmmaking family and is known as India’s representative character actress. She also wrote the script, which is based on her own real-life experiences. With a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Kalki Koechlin, whose film credits include Margarita With a Straw, and Tillotama Shome, who appeared in Monsoon Wedding, A Death in the Gunji demonstrates Konkona Sensharma’s talent in capturing both space and characters.
