Program Note
Ann, a film director, wants to make a movie based on the massacre of university students at the hands of the military in turbulent 1970s Thailand. While preparing for the film, she meets and begins to interview Taew, a former student movement leader who survived the massacre and went on to become a famous writer. The two eventually grow quite close, and Ann reconsiders her plans for the film when a stranger appears to suggest that it might be better for Taew to tell the story herself rather than from a third-person perspective. Anocha Suwichakornpong made her stunning debut in 2009 with Mundane History, which reflects on the connection one’s present has to the past and the future. Her second feature is also about identity but only more personal and direct. Identity consists of memories conveyed from the past, which are often mixed with reality and fantasy before being “edited” by subjective values. How then should one define real identity? Perhaps cinema is an appropriate medium to help us answer this question. (PARK Sungho)
