A psychodrama by Asghar Farhadi, an Iranian director who as been hailed for his outstanding depictions of human relationships. Young husband and wife Emad and Rana move into a new apartment while preparing for their roles in the play Death of a Salesman. In their new home, they find the previous tenant’s belongings. Soon afterwards, Rana is seriously injured in an attack by a stranger, and Emad goes on the hunt for the culprit, finding clues in the previous tenant’s effects. He discovers that the assailant is someone completely unexpected. Emad is now at a crossroad, the decision to mete out justice entirely his. But the flipside of anger, is always compassion and his way of handling the matter differs from that of Rana. Farhadi is resolute in his exploration of the film’s complex protagonist and the decision he must make. The latter part of the film, in which Emad and Rana confront the assailant, is a breathtaking forty minutes, akin to waves crashing over you one after another. A superb third act that pointedly exposes the weakness of mankind.
