Program Note
Fundamental Judaists Bina and Meir from Jerusalem are in hospital to see their son, Oliel, who is in a coma following a bombing raid. It’s first time they’ve seen him since they lost contact. An unknown woman stares at the family and approaches Bina. The woman is Amal, Oliel’s lover, but she is Palestinian so can’t tell his devout Jewish parents. She can’t leave the hospital because of her love for Oliel, and Bina senses a connection with Amal as she worries about Oliel as much as his family.
Between Worlds explores the difficulty in reconciling Arab and Israeli nations. There is potential for compromise between the parents and the young woman over Oliel, but it’s hard for them to accept each other, confirming the depth of the rift between the two worlds, which the director carefully hints at even as the gulf between the narrows. The movie maintains the tension by adding Amal’s secret to mix, and uses changing skies appropriate to each progression of the story. Particularly, the light thrown on Amal at the end suggests perhaps a vague sliver of hope.(RHEE Souewon)
