Program Note
The young son of India’s Home Minister is kidnapped. A rumor about the kidnapping spreads on social media but the minister keeps quite about it and tries to find the boy himself by using his administrative powers and a small minority of the police force. As no one knows the motive or whereabouts, the kidnapper, Nirmal, makes an unusual offer; if the minister can locate his missing son, he will return the boy.
Due to his supporting actor performances in Hollywood, Irrfan Khan has been better known abroad than in his home country of India, but his star has recently ascended at home through some powerful acting in Indian films that focused on social issues. In Madaari, Khan plays a father trying to avenge his son’s unjust death through fighting immense political power and its assistants plagued with corruption and irrationality. A severe criticism of politics and a nation engrossed more in corruption and making profits than ensuring the safety and protection of its people, a personal revenge plot provided viewers with some delightful catharsis.
