Program Note
Meehee meets a high school girl. She follows the girl and ends up at the house of Cho Sungsook. Although it’s the first time they’ve met, Meehee insists that they were once actually close friends. Sungsook accepts Meehee’s claim and treats her like a friend. Sungsook talks to the man she lives with about Meehee. The man visits Meehee and the two end up having sex. With Sungsook unaware of their relationship, the man and Meehee grow closer. And when the man is not around, Sungsook and Meehee grow closer together.
Jamsil is not a film that can be rationally explained easily. Someone pretends to be the best friend of a person they’ve never met and a man and a woman, who despite meeting for the first time, act like long-lost lovers. Has Meehee traveled through time from Sungsook’s past? The characters intertwine within an oscillating past and present. Instead of one clear interpretation, the film proposes different possibilities and makes the viewer anticipate what might come next. It’s an interesting film woven with several uncanny strings that connect the characters.
