Program Note
Young Senegalese street musicians Thiat, Gadiaga, and Kilifeu form a rap band called “Keur Gui”. The Revolution Won’t Be Televised is a fascinating documentary following Keur Gui and their passage to becoming social leaders through their political rap songs. Through direct communication with the public via music that combines rage with ingenious wordplay, the band contributed to the creation of a nationwide system of communities and urban residents. Keur Gui’s activities became the foundation for overthrowing the Senegalese dictator Abdoulaye Wade, and established the grass roots movement “Y’en a Marre”, which means “We are fed up”—a movement which has spread throughout the entire African Continent. The movement is the perfect reflection of Senegalese rage and frustration toward corruption and dictatorship. The female narrator and guide of the film is Khady Sylla, renowned Senegalese poet, novelist, and film director who represents the spirit of revolution that young people seek. The title encapsulates the hope that the revolution the band pursues will be delivered through their powerful rap lyrics. The Revolution Won’t Be Televised won FIPRESCI award in the Forum section at the Berlin Film Festival. (RHEE Souewon)
