Fan, a new film from the well-known Bollywood filmmaker Shahrukh Khan, is a thriller far unlike anything else in his oeuvre. Khan creates the most challenging and interesting character in his acting career by playing two roles at once; one a recklessly innocent young man and the other a star actor with a dual personality. Young Gaurav yearns for Aryan Khanna, a Bollywood star he considers the be-all and end-all. Gaurav happens to look like Aryan Khanna, so he calls himself Aryan Khanna Junior. But when Gaurav pays a visit to Khanna, the star shows no interest. So, Gaurav goes to extraordinary lengths to get his attention, but these just result in his arrest. Later, Khanna gets involved in a fatal scuffle with a man who used to be the actor’s most faithful fan, but has now grown to loathe him. Fan exudes the essence of Khan’s performance as a veteran actor with 20 years’ experience. The action-packed chase scene in Croatia, conducted by Oh Seyeong, the martial arts director from The Suspect, is exceptional. (PARK Jin-hee)
