Program Note
Shunji Iwai is famous for bringing out forgotten memories from his
viewers. He is also famous for doing this with brilliant visual effects. This time his focus is on the ′14-year-old,′ a new social phenomenon in Japan. A sophomore living in the suburbs, Yuichi is ostracized at school. At home, he cannot bear his stepfather and stepbrother. His only solace is the charismatic singer, Lily Chou-Chou. Stuck inside his room, he spends hours watching the singer′s fan site, ′Liliphilia′, which he himself created. One day, he meets a person with an I.D called ′Blue Cat′ at the site... This film was originally titled, ′Y2K project′ and was initially planned for a
joint direction between Shunji Iwai, Taiwan′s Edward Yang, and Hong Kong′s Stanley Kwan. However, the director cancelled the plan and asked the famous music producer Takeshi Kobayashi to create a virtual singer named Lily as a marketing strategy. In addition, Iwai introduced the story line on the Internet, creating the plot by chatting with internet users before making the film. Shunji Iwai put a great deal of effort into making this film, and exclaimed, "I would like to be remembered with this film". (Shion Yang)
