Program Note
REBORN focuses on the aftermath of the Vietnam and Iran-Iraq wars. It was inspired by the life of a Korean-Iranian woman who experienced the Korean War in her teens and the Iran-Iraq War after settling in Iran in her thirties. However, it is not just her story; it captures the voices of people still living with the scars of these two conflicts. Also, while it explores these scars with people as its clearest evidence, the film really focuses more on the people as victims, rather than merely relating their stories. REBORN catches their toughest moments in the present and recalls their pasts, their memories and their nightmares within the present, re-visualizing them anew. But can images truly convey their pain? This film seems to be a search for the answer to this question, rather than one that strives to provide it. REBORN, Im Heungsoon’s new film, is along similar lines as his feature debut, Jeju Prayer in that Jeju is not just land, much as Vietnam and Iran are the land of present-day Asia, but with historical scars.
