Program Note
It is impressive to see in this film the smile of the Iranian boy, Farhad, who is too young to know what despair means. This film doesn`t present a world shown through children`s hearts as in other Iranian films. Rather, it indicts child labor, a cold reality in present day Iran. 9-year-old Farhad doesn`t have an ID card since his illiterate and drug-addicted father hasn`t reported the boy`s birth. To earn his meals, Farhad must work, but is unable to get a job without identification. He sets our for his grandmother`s when a government official demands that he bring a relative with him in order to get an ID card. But at the bus terminal, Farhad is forcibly sent to an orphanage. Director Abolfazi Jalili has always been deeply aware of his social responsibility as a filmmaker. When he learned that a boy who acted in the previous film A True Story had severely burnt skin, he changed the direction of his work by filming the treatment process of the boy. By following Farhad in this film, the director depicts every niche of labor where Iranian children are exploited. He uses a documentary style instead of a dramatic narrative structure, because filmmaking is a way of social practice for him rather than an aesthetic question. (Kim ji-Seok)
