Program Note
Tiny Souls is a film about the miserable yet beautiful survival of Syrian child refugees. In 2012, nine-year-old girl Marwa and her family escapes Syria and begin their new life in a refugee camp in Jordan. Marwa and her younger siblings never stop running around and laughing even when their tent collapses and their mattresses get soaked. Just like other children, they are absorbed in playing, and they dream of going to a faraway planet on a spaceship. But a temporary home that was only supposed to last for a week or two becomes their home for four years. In the same refugee camp, Marwa blossoms into a young woman and experiences her first love. Dina NASER, a Jordanian director with Palestinian roots observe these transparent children and their miraculous force of life through an admiring and concerned gaze. Marwa imagines herself as a free dove who cannot be locked up within a chain-link fence or high walls, but the tragedy in reality transcends such thoughts. NASER’s camera captures the four years of Marwa and other children’s life at the camp, where every moment is vividly etched with great joy and even greater pain. (KANG Sowon)
