Program Note
Some poets live their lives as a picnic; here we find a family going on a picnic for their demise. The obvious nature of their trip approaches with extreme strain on the viewers, with scenes unfolding in
silence. As in his previous works, this film reflects the influence of silent film on the director. Minimal dialogue, a focus on images and a careful unfolding of the narrative give this work its primary shape. His portrayal of tragic sentiment mixed with lyricism creates a unique grotesque realism. As such he expresses violence in a completely new manner and, just as in the mythical world of his previous film
Liver and Potato, Song denounces the violence in our everyday life, with the group suicide of a family becoming a contemporaneous subject for all. (Lee Sang-Yong)
