Program Note
The Murders of Oiso tells the story of four 20-year-old friends—Tomoki, Shun, Kazuya, and Eita—who live in the seaside village of Oiso. The four friends grew up together, attended the same high school, and now work at the same construction company. One day, Tomoki finds the corpse of Ito, Kazuya’s uncle who was also their high school gym teacher. He then sees Chisato, a mysterious woman who was secretly married to Ito and finds out that Shun and Chisato are in a romantic relationship. Immediately after Ito’s funeral, Chisato shows up at Kazuya’s house, asking for the condolence money they received from families and friends at the funeral.
The Murders of Oiso paints the confusing and imperfect days of young men who have just turned 20, depicting a murder that takes place in a quiet village that seemed impervious to any kind of terrible incidents or accidents, strange reactions the people of the village have to the murder, and the completely different aspects of a friend they’d known their whole lives. A second feature by Takuya MISAWA, a graduate of the Asian Film Academy, Murders of Oiso received the 2018 Asian Cinema Fund’s Post-Production Fund. (PARK Sun Young)
