Program Note
An incredibly gifted young dancer, whose style is "street," is influenced as much by break-dancing as by ballet. Mute since birth, she competes weekly for cash in New York′s hippest nightclub. Then she is discovered by a handsome, young scientist, who tries to persuade her to be his guinea-pig in testing a device he hopes will help her communicate. As the experimentation unfolds, she begins to fall in love with him; and so her overprotective manager-brother attempts to thwart the scientist′s efforts to help her.
"I always dreamed... [of] direct[ing] a musical, and in a way, The Dancer is not far... from it; music is a kind of lead in the story... almost a character. The Dancer is the story of a mute dancer who expresses herself through her dances; but beyond this... to accept... others and communicate with them - that′s what I wanted to talk about. [These] ideas [were] exciting to develop... at a time... [when the] Internet is creating new [ways] to express ourselves." (Fred Garson)
