Program Note
The protagonist, Su Daquan, is a middle-aged, unmarried man working for his father′s taxi company whose adventures provide various episodes to this twisted yet comic film. Su Daquan′s family and fellow drivers help fill in the comic plot. Su Daquan provides a seamless narration for these amusing and quirky episodes. The film nimbly goes back and forth between present and future, providing penetrating counterpoints and comic rhythms. Although the romantic plot, which begins when Su Daquan meets the girl of his dreams, takes up the major portion of the film, the chain-like linked episodes give a feeling of a true ensemble. This film shows the humanity and the normal down-to-earth lifestyles of city dwellers in Taiwan in addition to the hustle and bustle of human relations amidst Taiwan′s busy traffic. The backdrop of a taxi company is an appropriate
metaphor for this piercing comedy. Although traffic accidents are considered normal in this taxi company, they reveal the nitty-gritty of real-life where petty emotions are as common as deep feelings. (Kim Young-Jin)
