Program Note
Nine years since the Tohoku earthquake, starved corpses with tied hands and feet are found in Miyagi Prefecture. The victims are a civil servant in charge of health and welfare and a local government official. They were men of good standing without particular enemies. Detective Seiichiro suspects them to be part of serial murders and searches for the murderer. Tone, a young man who served time for arson and assault, surfaces as a suspect. Is Tone the murderer? Why are the murders occurring? The film is driven by mystery but the twist is not what’s important. It recalls the tragedies that occurred in the process of cleaning up after the Tohoku earthquake, looking squarely at the fact that some have been left unprotected by society in the wake of a disaster. Based on Nakayama Sachiri’s social mystery novel, this film poses a grave question to modern Japanese society. (NAM Dong-chul)
