Program Note
This is an upbeat and quirky movie about a group of loveable misfits who cluster in the diner where Bella waits tables. Her regulars are a trio of elderly gentlemen, all charmingly depicted, whose kibitzing and merriment is based on their advancing age. While romance seems to be fading as a possibility in their lives, one of them, Paul, skims the lonely-hearts ads and meets an attractive middle-aged woman. Bella′s well-to-do mother sets Bella up with Bruno, a cab driver whose two kids were just dumped on him by his estranged wife. Determined not to scare yet another man off with her dreams of marriage and family, Bella plays it cool. As their romance heats up, it starts a series of comic and romantic misadventures that provide the charm and intrigue of this endlessly engaging film. Despite love′s accompanying twists and turns, everyone hold out for the best. And the persistent Bella discovers that maybe fairy tales can come true... even in New York City.
