Program Note
Gripsholm plunges the audience into the pleasure-craving, decadent world of Berlin cabaret at the beginning of the 1930s. That was the time when the last taboos were torn down and fig leaves quickly became a thing of the past. Kurt is a pugnacious author and, thanks to his risque writing, a celebrated star. In a seemingly endless summer he travels to the castle of Gripsholm in Sweden, together with his girlfriend Lydia and two of their friends. But Kurt is pursued by legal action initiated by the army of the German Reich. In one of his articles he made the statement that "all soldiers are murderers” - a statement that is still highly controversial. Kurt sees the brown shirts looming on the horizon and decides not to return to Germany. Tucholasky once wrote: “You often think that love is stronger than time, but time is always stronger than love." This is what the four summer vacationers have to learn during their sensual, boisterous, melancholic, and bitter journey to the North.
