Program Note
The film, with six intertitles for each section: "Prologue," "The Girls Are Five," "Kids," "Heartthrobs," "Holiday in Italy," "The Final Exam Year," and "Adulthood," is a story of four 13-year-old girls, Emilie, Stella, Ines and Marion, who become inseparable friends. We see them changing and developing until they finish school and achieve maturity- at times exhilarated by dancing, boys, moments of sheer happineess at being alive, then alternately brought down by the spectre of death, blood and fear, they sow their wild oats, settling scores with their bodies, their parents, their friends and their first loves. There′s the worrywart, the wallflower, the fattie, the hysteric: each has their own private demons, dreams, charm, and shame; not managing to climb the rope in gym class, daring a sexual proposition to a boy, wanting to play the fool during the first ever holiday in Itay with the gang. Their friendship transforms them, as they live their youth.
