Jacky, a 25-year-old living in Eindhoven with his Chinese immigrant mother, grew up in the vacuum between two cultures. He is intelligent but lacks the energy to steer his life in a specific direction. His mother urges him to marry a girl from China, following tradition, and leave the parental home. Before he realises, he is living with the young Chinese Chi-Chi in an apartment in Amsterdam. Chi-Chi wants to be a caring spouse, but she doesn′t even know what her husband does for a living. Gary, an entertainer for Chinese tourists with a beautiful singing voice, develops feelings for Jacky, but Jacky remains oblivious to these desires. In an attempt to win Jacky′s affection, Gary invites himself to the birthday party of Jacky′s mother, who is unpleasantly surprised. Gary′s feminine singing voice causes her even greater distress and the situation gets ugly. After the party, Jacky cannot face returning to Chi-Chi in Amsterdam. Chi-Chi wakes up alone the next morning.
