Program Note
In this superbly crafted, yet disturbing, look at a group of people far from their homeland, Karmakar presents us with a cross-section of people in an unforgiving, almost merciless manner. A group of Germans are stuck in the Manila International Airport waiting for their delayed charter aircraft. A number of them are tourists. Some of the men are married to Filipino women, and obviously revel in the power and sex appeal their money has given them. It is clear that many of the men are there to enjoy the flourishing Filipino sex trade. Realizing there is nothing to do but wait for news of their flight, this group of strangers begin to share their stories. As the delay grows longer and longer, and as more and more inhibitions are put aside, the stories become more personal and disturbing, until a kind of anarchic spirit starts to pass through the group - ending in a truly remarkable rendition of one of Verdi′s most famous choruses.
