Program Note
As if he celebrates his fifty years of career, Dario Argento returns to the giallo film, the genre that made him an international celebrity. On a bright summer day in Rome, Diana (Ilenia Pastorelli) is chased by a man. She loses her sight in a car accident but steps into the world of villains like a warrior. A master of horror films (Deep Red (1975), Suspiria (1977)), the director brings life to various characters and paints images with hallucinatory colors, which makes the film absorbing. This eighty-old master presents two impressive portraits in the film: the one of Diana who fights against men’s sexual and violent desires and the other of Rome to which the filmmaker is fascinated as a hideout for murderers and witches.
