Program Note

The story of a family produced by Kore-eda Hirokazu has taken a path of transition and expansion. In Broker, he explores the possibilities of an alternative family. Single mother Soyoung (Lee Ji Eun) leaves her baby, Woosung, in a baby box, where Sanghyun (Song Kang Ho) and Dongsoo (Gang Dong Won) steal the baby to sell to a couple who wants to have a baby. When Soyoung comes back to reclaim her baby the next day, things spin out of control. Eventually Soyoung agrees to help find good parents for Woosung, and she and the brokers go on a journey together. Detective Sujin (Bae Doona), assigned to an investigation into child selling, follows the group. Broker explores the possibilities of forming an alternative family between Soyoung, Woosung, Sanghyun, and Dongsoo. (HONG Eunmi)

Director

KORE-EDA Hirokazu

Kore-eda Hirokazu hails from Tokyo, Japan, and is a graduate of Waseda University. After debuting as a director with Maborosi (1995), he made several feature films including After Life (2001), Nobody Knows (2004), and Like Father, Like Son (2013) for which he garnered numerous awards at numerous internationally renowned film festivals. In 2018, he was recognized with directing mastery receiving Cannes Palme d′Or with Shoplifters. In the following year, he was chosen as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year by the Busan International Film Festival.Broker is the first Korean movie that he directed and was invited to the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival where star Song Kang-Ho was honored with the Best Actor Award.
