While catching cicadas in the middle of the night with other villagers, Mangkungchi suddenly vanishes. Believing the rumors that he has been kidnapped by organ traffickers, Kasan’s father and other men of the village patrol the community at night. Meanwhile, after the procession of the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary passes through the village, the local church pastor begins to collect offerings in preparation for the apocalyptic darkness which will last for forty days and forty nights. A native of Meghalaya in northeastern India, Dominic Sangma created this film based on his childhood memories of growing up in a predominantly Christian village. As institutional politics and religion wield power and exploit people’s fears of outsiders or those with different appearances, the world is already dark enough even without the impending apocalyptic darkness. Rapture unfolds this narrative with mystical images through the eyes of the young cleft-lipped boy Kasan, who suffers from night blindness. (CHOI Eun)
