Program Note
Continuing her streak of success, since winning Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival with I Was at Home, But... (2019), Angela Schanelec has once again received recognition, winning Best Screenplay for her latest film. Music unfolds the journey of Jon, whose existence is marked by death and loss since his birth. Even when the sky is overcast, we don’t know what it would bring until it starts to pour rain. Jon is someone who sings a cantata of life amidst the troubles of his life rather than wanting divine retribution or wailing in sorrow. In these moments, he appears more compassionate than God himself. Bestowing grace on this land is in our hands. Schanelec’s typical long takes, seemingly ordinary yet enigmatic images, and minimal dialogue complete this captivating film. True to the director’s approach of crafting myths of daily life, every shot serves a purpose. (LEE Yong Cheol)
