Program Note
Inshallah a Boy was the first Jordanian film ever to be invited to the Cannes Film Festival. A woman, whose husband suddenly dies leaving her to raise her young daughter alone, faces the prospect of losing both her home and custody of her daughter. According to Jordanian law, if a woman with only a daughter loses her husband, her property and custody rights pass to her husband’s blood relatives. To save her home and her daughter, she lies and says she is carrying a son in her womb. Inshallah, whose side will God take? Although the film exposes the absurdity of the situation faced by women in Jordan, it is a fascinating movie that examines different aspects of society without reducing it into a good/evil dichotomy. The man who tries to steal a woman’s property and custody is not a typical villain, as society imposes patriarchal duties on him. “It is very important for me to make the audience think. I believe that we are in a critical time, where we need to think more of what has been normalized for us, for 100 years now,” says the director. (NAM Dong-chul)
