Program Note
Birju and Shona live in the slums with their daughter Muni. Together they navigate Kolkata’s affluent neighborhoods each very morning, collecting trash on a handcart. They sift through salvageable items from among the discarded materials and bring them home. These items become the medium for stories they share with their daughter each night. When Birju receives a work order from his supervisor to collect a discarded motorcycle, he finds himself in trouble since he doesn’t know how to ride one. Suman Ghosh, who shared keen insights into Indian society in his previous work, skillfully combines documentary realism and magical realism through an immersive lens that delves into the daily lives of the garbage-collecting couple. The fantasies narrated to their daughter intertwine with Birju’s practical anxieties, addressing the themes of social inequality and economic disparity while maintaining a warm perspective on the life of a family with dreams.
