Program Note
The pandemic has changed everything about our daily lives, including the ways we view movies. Now we search for ratings to determine if a movie is worth spending money and time on, have a remote in hand with the double-speed button ready to be pressed, and sit on a plush couch watching on a large TV monitor, and consider such actions as “being a smart consumer.” Kleber Mendonça Filho’s lens reflects on his hometown of Recife, which has been transformed by the fleeting passage of time. “You should say when you like something,” he narrates, revealing a nostalgia for a time and space that is now shrouded in darkness and dust. Through his documentation of the past, the director expresses his regret that the spaces that enchanted him as a child now have an air of melancholy. As the director slowly unravels his deeply personal memories, he extends the camera’s gaze to the apartment, the neighborhood, and the downtown theater to complete his love letter to cinema.
