Program Note
Adamant is a hospital psychiatric center. This film follows patients, caregivers, and doctors as they travel to and from the center, which floats on the Seine River. The director writes a few lines of sentence in the beginning and the end of the film, but doesn’t force any theme or moral. This is the stance that the movie takes. It naturally reminds of Philibert’s 1997 film Every Little Thing with the same quiet, uninvolved way of looking at the patients. It’s as if you’re trying to decide what to read, and when you reach the end of the movie, you’re confronted with your own deep feelings. It’s like reading a poem written by someone who didn’t say anything. It makes you think about the freedom we enjoy, about doing what we want to do, about the value art adds to our lives, and about living together, while looking at the people who we thought were different from us.
